Noémie Marmara
Noémie was the last born baby in Cuckfield Hospital in the UK, on a first day of spring.
Her life path seems to articulate an impulse for renewal in the face of the obsolete - an everlasting fold of endings and beginnings.
Noémie is a neurodivergent artist, born with what is known in medical terms as Sensory Processing Disorder - what she describes as a heightened ability to perceive and attune to fields of subtle information, or “non ordinary reality”.
This extreme sensitivity brought forth a profound and singular life experience, but also one of incompatibility in relation to society.
Noémie is a multidisciplinary visual artist exploring the mediums of ceramics, photography, and writing, in the pursuit of unveiling the space between matter and the impalpable.
Today, Noémie lives and works from her studio in the village of Le Tignet in the South East of France, in deep reverence for life.
‘Essence’ - 2024
After being raised in several European countries, Noémie obtained a BA in English Language and Literature from University College London, and an MD in Communication, Media and Creative Industries from Sciences Po Paris.
Several years’ professional experience in both large and independent publishing houses were interrupted by the eruption of a severe health condition and the subsequent crumbling of the existing structures of her life.
The following years were spent immersed in the study of healing modalities, integrative psychology, consciousness and spirituality. Four years were spent undergoing training and supervision in several holistic healing modalities, including practices from the Barbara Ann Brennan School. Two years were spent in deep practice of engaged Zen Buddhism, as a resident lay practitioner in monastic practice centers in Asia and Europe.
In November 2019, during a three month meditation retreat, Noémie experienced a sudden and thunderously life altering phenomena of expansion of consciousness. This, once again, catalyzed unstoppable alteration to her perceptual reality and her experience within the human body. Integration continues to this day - an unending process of deconstruction and restructuration of the psyche.
Noémie discovered in the medium of clay - this matter which evokes to her the flesh of the world - a creative pathway through which to anchor the process of transformation occurring within physical form, and to bind her to terrestrial life.
‘Quiescence’ - 2024
Noémie undertook four years of training and apprenticeship in ceramic techniques in Europe (France, Spain and Greece). Living on the island of Crete, she was fortunate to learn from a ceramic master of the traditional village of Margarites, among a family of ceramicists and archeological researchers who have retrieved ancient Minoan methods of ceramic craft, and are devoting themselves to their restoration and transmission.
She recently trained with a Korean Onggi Master, with the aspiration of continuously expanding her realm of technical possibilities.
“I imagine objects, large vessels, which serve to hold my vision of the immensity within the depths of Self… awakening the sensation of touching other worlds.”
